Biography
Stephanie Powers spent her formative years in Swansea, Massachusetts and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree. Post college, she moved to Washington D.C. and began a career in business. The last segment of her work life was spent at Reagan National and Dulles Airports, working on the design, operation and development of the duty-free and retail shops, as well as the restaurants and eateries.
Retirement afforded her the opportunity to turn once again to her true passion – painting. As of this writing, she has completed more than 35 pet portraits, over 20 home portraits, and 40 other commissioned works.
Stephanie currently resides in East Providence, Rhode Island.
Artist’s Statement
I enjoy painting a wide range of subjects, including landscapes, seascapes, flowers and pets. The variety of my work expresses what brings me joy. Some of my more recent paintings celebrate the wonderful childhood I enjoyed on the rocky coast of southern New England. I try to infuse each painting with a sense of warmth and wonder.
A large portion of my current work is devoted to commissioned paintings — primarily landscapes, seascapes, pet portraits, and home portraits. When a client commissions a painting, they have a unique opportunity to communicate with me and participate in the creative process. I enjoy collaborating with my clients; I value their input and appreciate their viewpoint. It is a magical moment when a client’s inspiration is transformed into an enduring work of art.
It is my intent to grow and improve as an artist. I share my paintings with my followers on social media and enjoy receiving their comments. Often they are quite eye-opening and helpful. The best of my work is a collaboration between the artist and the client/buyer. I continue to celebrate all that the Southern New England region has to offer, and to relay those images to the canvas.
I have always been fascinated by sunlight streaming through a window and how that light can transform and define an object. That fascination remains with me today.
With pet portraits, I study each animal and discuss with the client the different aspects of the animal’s personality; some dogs are strong, some happy-go-lucky, some dignified, some goofy, and some are just plain charming. I try and interpret those aspects on the canvas.
With my home portraits, I endeavor to infuse each home with life. I steer away from straightforward, architectural renderings of a house that may be accurate, but give no sense of the family and warmth within. Often my home portraits include children, dogs, or objects that define each home at a moment in time.
